, equilateral triangle and square are constantly combined, transformed and moved in a jigsaw game, so that they bring into being figures, living creatures, artificial objects, spectacles as well as events. The inspiration behind the work stems from the game of building blocks and jigsaws, in the process of which the artist experiences flashes of ideas and continuous association or creation of images.

Artist Statement

It is among man’s most fundamental desires to create. We keep forging ahead usually to try out new possibilities and to assure our advancement. There is at first imitation and transcendence, and then comes the loss of control, in the end, we have new orders and new beginnings. In my artistic creation, I have always been raising questions such as: What is the connection between memories and conduct? What else implications are behind the geometric figures ?

The control of water, water pigments and limbs has becomes a constraint on loose consciousness. During the painting process, I always try to maintain an equal relationship with the material.

The files are missing

YEAR: 2014
DURATION: 7 mins

This piece is made up of 9 parts. The inspiration was drawn from a visual effect discovered by the artist when a source file accidentally went missing while she was working on a video project with computer.

Common video editing techniques: connecting several video files to a project; by the order of layers, each file is edited and altered in terms of size, shape, transparency level, readable area, play speed and colours. When the source files are missing from a project, the programme will replace those with a single image – a blank screen or test screen.

The files are missing from Chai Mi on Vimeo.

The artist has selected nine video projects of hers, in all of which the source files were removed. Meanwhile, the previous editing instructions are still kept in the project, leaving the test screens the only objects available for further editing and transforming. In this video piece, one would be amazed all the effects brought by such transformation. Video editing followed by the increasing number of missing files, from less to more.

Birds Dream

The animated short film Birds Dream is shot using stop-motion technique, and its ‘actors’ are bird models handcrafted by the artist. Its concept derives from the artist’s own series of painting Bird and live animation performance the sparrow and the raven (2012).

A new-born sparrow entered a world full of colourful objects and strange birds. When curiously idling in this world, the sparrow found a new-born raven with which it began to explore the place together. They encountered all sorts of strange birds and mysterious geometric shapes of different colours. Their encounters have made them bewilder and fantasise, soon their body start to change as well…
