《《《 氵 》》》 RESONANCE OF WATER｜Audio-Visual Theater Project
The Artist, Chai Mi, launched the experimental performance about “water” in 2015, and created a multimedia theater together with two sound artists thruoutin and Anita Pan. Using the self-created water devices, they perform sound production, framing and image making on the scene. The water, as the media and topic of the entire performance, is combined with the devices, behaviors, live music, impromptu singing and live images. The performance mines various images caused by the water, creates an abstract and poetic experience of images and sound, and explore the multi-relationship between man and environment. According to different forms and sizes of the water, the performance is divided into three movements: Drip, Flow and Surge, working together to present a special conversation created by the water.
” 氵” , an associative compound character, can be read as “shui”, the same pronunciation of “水”.
In 2012, I indited my first live performance work “The Sparrow And The Raven”. Working with some musicians, I presented fantastic experience about birds and dreams in the live performance. During my stay in La Rochelle, France, in 2015, I produced the image work ” Spacetime Illusion “, related with the live performance by contemporary dancer. As an artist, I am more and more interested in this kind of live performance with impromptu components, and I would like to constantly attempt and explore more possibilities in it. In 2015, I got down to the work for a new project of image performance, “Water (水)”, finally renamed as “氵”. Herein, “水” and ” 氵” are two different characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.
water and emotion
I would like to find strangeness and familiarity simultaneously in common things. My passion for the water roots from its volatile form, the related mysteries, the connection with mankind, and my feeling and anxiety about the surroundings at present. All of these has influenced and guided my art works about the water since late 2014, including paintings, videos and live performances. 《《《 氵》》》 is just one of the case. In my opinion, the water is strongly connected with the emotions of mankind, and thus, it is also a material that can easily trigger the communication. Both the common sense and what happened around me are constantly influencing my thinking and the trends of my works. I find that this kind of multi-relations between the water and people, from survival to physiology, makes a huge space for creating images.
narrative with images
Superficially, the Chinese eulogistic poetries in ancient times depict some objects, while in effect, they actually reflects the complex emotion. Such expression is generated by written words, however, I hope to get a similar result through images and sounds. During working, “image” and “intention” are the most frequent words existing in my mind. For me, “water” itself is abstract in essence, and thus, I strive to narrate things through abstract things in my works, with the “image” and the “intention” of water as the clue.
the instant occurrence in space
In my opin ion, moving images is like a layer of changing illusory skin, and it can be adhered on any material, altering the physical properties of objects. They can also create an instant-changing field. When the area is large enough, it sets up some kind of environmental tension, just like in the theater. As well, there will be some real-time images produced by the actions of the performers in this work. The images, as the environment components, will influence people too. This kind of time-space relationship made by the real and the virtual will create more images. The enchantment of live performances is the immediacy, since the occurrence of each time will be different and the feeling from watching in the scene can’t be replicated. Just like striking a match, you may feel its burning and heat after lighting, and then, you have to see its disappearing. Everything has a beginning and an end. Children tend to unconsciously striking many matches. This state from nature gaze along with empty and drunk, also has random thoughts of Traceability. I am very interested in the production and the possibilities of this state, and I do hope to build such atmosphere in the performance.
American born electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist, thruoutin, has been based in China since 2009. His work varies from project to project, but often revolves around the combining of different genres and with a focus on organic and digital sounds. He has brought his music to Canada, Taiwan, Korea and various cities in the US and throughout mainland China. Besides self-releases, thruoutin has also been featured on such labels as Jingweir (Beijing), Huashan (Shanghai), 87Fei87 (Beijing), Senzu Collective (North Hollywood) LABAREDA (Lisbon) and Aud-Art (Pittsburgh).
Anita Pan is based in Beijing. She studied literature in the Netherlands and started her creative practice in 2011 when she returned to China. Her exploration of the relationships and boundaries between poetry and theatre center around word, image, sound and time-space. She world with many mediums such as improvisational singing, creative writing, installation pieces, photo/video, and live performance. With a preference for spacious and ceremonial voices, she focuses her vocal practice on interaction with environmental elements in hope of building scenes in accordance with the atmosphere.
